Finish the line with Dave Ely
by Don Andreas
Grandview Thunder Magazine, 1999

Continuing on with this new column in celebration of Thunder on the Hill's 10th season, I caught up with one of Central Pa's rising young talents, Sinking Spring's Dave Ely. As usual, I start the sentence for the driver of the No 77e Sprint Car, and it's up to Dave to Finish the Line.

THE HARDEST THING I'VE EVER DONE IS:    Drive a Sprint Car. Of anything I've tackled, the Sprint Car racing would have to be the hardest. It seems like every time you start figuring things out or know the answers, they change all the questions on you.

THE ONE THING THAT HELPS ME BE SUCCESSFUL IN RACING IS:    My team. They always work so well together and really help keep me up whenever I start to get down on myself.

MY RACING HERO IS:    Doug Wolfgang. Basically because from the time I was very little, he was the first guy I picked out. Every time I watch him, I'm really impressed, and I just always liked the way he conducted himself on and off the race track.

IN HIGH SCHOOL, THEY ALWAYS TOLD ME:    that I would be a race car driver. Student Council used to even run trips to my races, and the kids would always support me. Plus I was able to get as much time off from school as I needed to go race.

NO MATTER HOW BUSY I AM, I ALWAYS MAKE TIME FOR:    fans or children who come up to me and ask for an autograph, or even if they just want to talk about the races that night.

ONE OF THESE DAYS:    I'm finally going to have a good night the whole night through and win myself a 410-Sprint Car race.

ONE THING WITH RACING THAT I'LL EVER FIGURE OUT IS:    how on one night, something will work exactly perfect, and the next night, the same thing will not work at all. This is something I ponder all the time (laughs).

I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO SAY GOOD-BYE TO:    racing. It's just too much of my life.
