by Lincoln Speedway Website April 29, 2000 ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 4/29/00 - Just ask Dave Ely the importance of running in second while attempting to maneuver through lapped traffic. The Sinking Spring youngster used some good-ole' fashion tactic as he blew by James Chesson on lap 18 en route to his second feature victory of the 2000 season at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. "Sometimes, that's where you want to be," said Ely regarding the patience he exhibited in the later stages of the 25-lap main event. "I could see James was getting off the throttle a bit in order to get around that lapped traffic and then I went for it." Went for it he did. And for that matter, it was the deciding moment of the race as Ely never relinquished the lead while Lincoln Speedway points leader and track dominator Fred Rahmer tried to catch Ely. Brook Weibley grabbed the lead at the start of the event, but his lead came to a quick end Glendon Forsythe grabbed the top spot on the second circuit. However, Weibley returned the favor on lap five when he retook the position just before the fifth caution of the race occurred after Jimmy McBee Jr. spun in turn three. Chesson, a sophomore at Marymount College, moved by Forsythe for second on the restart and focused his attention on reeling in the race leader. Chesson would use the high line to pass Weibley in turn tw on the eighth circuit, but Ely was following closely behind as he secured the runner-up spot on the same lap. "I saw Chesson get the lead, and I figured he was gone," said Ely. "That kid is going to be tough in the future and he's really showing some strength now." Ely made an event winning pass on Chesson on lap 17. Chesson later hit the outside, backstretch fence allowing Rahmer to move into second. Ely, who had a tire deflate in victory lane, hung on for the victory while Rahmer was second, Chesson finished third, Steve Siegel was fourth and Weibley finished fifth. Bobby Weaver, Curt Michael, Niki Young, Jesse Wentz and Billy Sims completed the top five. Heat events for the 28 super sprints went to Glendon Forsythe, Fred Rahmer and Pat Cooper. After flipping while leading in his heat, Dave Haight returned to win the consolation event. Steve Clabaugh became the seventh winner in seven races in the 15-lap thundercar feature event. Clabaugh moved into third on the all-time Lincoln Speedway win list with 19 wins. Clabaugh, who was going to retire and focus his attention with a local sprint car or NASCAR Busch Grand National crew, passed Allen Cullum on lap nine to post the victory. Duane Watson settled for third, Bernie Beard was fourth and Sean Herrick was fifth. Heat races for the 30 thundercars were taken by Mike Zeigler, Neil Smith and Bobby Beard. Nat Tucky claimed the six-lap consolation race. Two-time defending nationals winner Tony Steele of Georgetown, Del., led all 15-laps of the vintage stock feature event. Bryan Brooks was second, Harold Warrington was third, James Layne was fourth and Tom Swanger came home fifth. Gary Felty won the 11-car sportsman vintage car stock car heat event. Tony Steele captured the nine-car modified stock car heat event.
